4 Tips to build “mental strength” for wrestling

I’m off to give a Strength, Conditioning and Nutrition Clinic to a small, yet-growing wrestling/mma club in our area this morning, but before I go I want to get these 4 powerful mental training tips to you:

One of the best things you can do in your wrestling career is to learn how to develop mental confidence and become fearless…

It begins to happen as you get better and better in your wrestling technique and gain experience.

BUT, for some guys it’s not so easy.  They constantly feel like there’s a knot in their stomach before big matches.

Other guys are completely confident on the mat… until they have a big match against a really tough competitor.

Then there are some wrestlers who struggle with anxiety when they have to wrestle in front of their friends, parents and girlfriend:)

Don’t worry if any of the above applies to you… you’re not alone.  It’s kind of natural to feel that way before you wrestle… but you can’t let it affect you so much that you are like a ”deer in the headlights” on the mat.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Brian Cain, Mental Training Coach for George (Rush) St. Pierre – the World’s #1 MMA Fighter.

He gave me a complete training system for wrestlers to develop their minds:

Here are 4 tips for developing mental toughness for wrestling:

1.  Goal Setting The first thing Coach Cain recommends to develop mental toughness for wrestling is to set goals.

Do you remember the movie “Vision Quest’?  (If you haven’t seen it, you MUST!)  It’s a movie about a High School wrestler who is good… but not great.  He sets a goal to drop down in weight to build the current State Champion – Brian Schute.

He sticks to his goal the entire movie… despite everyone telling him that he can’t do it.

At the end he reaches his dream… and it all started with a goal.

Of course, that was Hollywood (and when “I” was in High School:))

But… the message was important:  Set your goals and don’t let anyone get in your way!

2.  Imagery and Visualization The next thing you need to learn after you set your goals for wrestling, is the art of Imagery and Visualization.

Imagery and Visualization is learning how to “see” your goals…

You can do this by sitting in a quiet room with no distractions. Close your eyes, breathe through your nose in deep relaxed breathes.

Now… picture your wrestling matches.  ”SEE” your opponents.

Go through the entire match in your mind… from the crowd, to your opponent, to the referee.  See yourself execute your moves in real-time.

In the “Vision Quest” example, Lowden Swain (the star) would kick-back after practice, close his eyes and picture the big match against Brian Schute.

YOU can do the same thing!!

3.  Peak Performance Routines You need to have a peak performance routine.  This is important for any sport.

It’s a ritual that you go through that gets YOU ready for your match.

For some guys it’s pacing around the back of the gym with headphones on…

For other guys it’s sitting alone…

For some it may be Shadow Wrestling in the corner.

Whatever it is that works for you, go with it!!

As you improve in your sport you will develop your own peak performance routines.

4.  Develop Mental Toughness Have you heard the expression ”you ARE the company you keep?”

It means if you want to develop mental toughness you should be hanging out with those that are mentally tough.

Now, I’m not talking about bullies or jerks…

I’m talking about positive influences who are confident, responsible and lack fear on the mat.

It’s contagious…

When you wrestle with Champions, eat lunch with Champions, hang out with Champions… you WILL become better and mentally tough.

But it all starts with setting your goals!

What are your wrestling goals??

Are you ready to get mentally tough for next season??

That’s all for today…

Steve
